The interesting thing was that this ‘force follow’ happened for people who had unfollowed the POTUS account before the inauguration to unfollow the @POTUS handle under Trump Administration. This problem was not isolated to one account and occurred with other official accounts like @VP and @PressSec. In fact, the people who followed @POTUS44, the archive of @POTUS account under Obama administration.

One interesting thing to note is that Dorsey pointed that Obama administration felt that it was only fair to transition accounts with followers intact instead of any old tweets. This shifting or ‘transition’ of accounts without any prompt consent from the users was against the policies set by Twitter, and it is good that the problem has been rectified. You can go and follow Barack Obama on his personal account to keep up with his posts.
